Re: hi my name's Andy '90
Thu, October 30, 2003 - 11:55 AMI'm on the other side of the continent in Columbus, GA. I'm a science reference librarian. I'm Arts and Sciences (majored in Biology and Society) '84. There are not a lot of Cornellians in the south.

Fri, October 31, 2003 - 2:50 PMHow did you make the switch from CS to marine biology. I got an MLS because I knew I did not want to go to grad school in my field and I wanted to be out and working fast.

Re: Chris '86
Sat, November 1, 2003 - 8:40 AMI started out taking prerequisite courses at night school -- a year of general chemistry (I hadn't taken chem since 8th grade!) followed by a year of organic. Then I quit work to go to school full time, and started volunteering at a museum in the invertebrate zoology department. They offered me a job that gave me the skills to get my current job as a biologist with the city water department. While I was back in school, I took a total of about 60 units in biology and related fields, but didn't get a degree -- a second bachelor's would have required some general ed courses, and a master's would have taken longer.
Did you go straight to library school from Cornell? Do you enjoy your work?

Re: Chris '86
Mon, November 3, 2003 - 8:19 AMI took two years off and lived in Ithaca. I loved the town but living hand to mouth was awful. I did not know if I would be working from one week to the next and I was scaird of having a hole develop in my resume.
I went to library school in August of 1986 and graduated in August of 1987. That is the where the Syracuse University in my tribes comes in. I'm both a Cornellian and a Syracusan.
Being a librarian is fun. You get to help students write papers which has a big empathy factor in it. I also get to do some web design and lately some very interesting graphic work.
